Odd thoughts, quirky ramblings, random pictures, and the latest in quirky finds from across the web, QJ has a little something for everyone.

I'm posting mostly over at Quirky Cookery right now, where I play with my food and teach you to have fun with it, too. Come check me out?

Don't forget to check your candy!

You know, for razorblades and toothbrushes, of course. You never know what those sadistic ad companies might be trying to con you into, after all. :P

Yes, that was a real ad campaign. Colgate really did start advertising oral health (and their products) in Bangkok by putting wooden toothbrushes in the middle of sweets such as ice cream bars and cotton candy. Sneaky, huh? Maybe they were just trying to dress up for Halloween?

'Tis the season to be burning candles

As the temperatures drop and the holiday season approaches, it seems candles start to wiggle out of the woodwork more and more. Why not have a more interesting candle to show off instead of the standard Yankee Candle type versions?

Balloons for Two

Double your pleasure, double your fun?

Sometimes, there just aren't any words for things I post...

Quirky Christmas ornaments -- Creepy, bizarre, offensive, and just plain weird, too, yikes!

Following the theme of my last post, here's some Christmas stuff 3 months in advance. Gah, I hate this trend. I'm already getting sick of Christmas songs. Isn't that sad? It's not even November yet, much less the end of December. Double gah!

You didn't really want more Halloween posts, though, right? Right??

Anyway....

This post is really interesting, no matter what time of the year. It's a collection of a whopping 54 ornaments, and it'll have you gasping and giggling. Some might offend some people like the unborn baby trooper which features a fetus packing fighter gear or the Bin Laden combo with bombs and skulls. Oh, and there are some non-PG-13 ones there, too, so don't click if you're young enough to need to cover your eyes.

Others are funnier, though, and would only offend you if you're the type of person who goes on a rampage about society being fat and unruly when someone mentions McDonald's.

If that's the case, why are you even on this site? Seriously, shoo fly. ;)

In the first paragraph, there are some links to even more off-beat holiday creations that you've probably never seen before, too, so clear your schedule for some early Christmas fun time.

Oh come on, he's cute! <3

Pop away the days, one bubble at a time

One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is that before October even hits, the stores are starting to stock Christmas items. Thanksgiving stuff is out before Halloween is even nearby. And I'm starting to expect to see Groundhog's Day or St. Patrick's Day items on the shelves before the first cold day of winter.

But, either you fight the system or you join it, and I have a feeling that this continuously growing trend to push out holiday items months before they arrive won't be going away any time soon, so I might as well jump on board.

So here you have it. It's not too early to mention this quirky 2010 pop-the-bubble calendar. Gone are the days where you cross out the dates with a black or red sharpie marker. Just pop away all the stress of each day, wee!

What? You're not a bubble popper? Fiiinnneee.

Go pop some pills instead then. Er. They're vitamins, I swear! This one has the added perks of making sure you're not forgetting to take your daily multi-vitamin, too. :)

Cthulu baby blanket is ready to cuddle/frighten you

I think the Cthulhu fad ran out a few years back, but this one's still kicking here. It's a bit late to get one ready for this year's Halloween, but maybe start planning for the next kid you pop out? Having one of these ready and waiting for a new baby in the house would be perfect!

Scary pumpkin - It's definitely coming to get you

I must say, this pumpkin predator is probably one of the most detailed "scary" pumpkins I've seen before.

Want even more detailed pumpkin carvings? Try out Pumpkin Gutter for tons of gallery photos. Extreme Pumpkins also has some interesting ones, although the general theme seems to be creative setups or quirky carvings, rather than overly detailed and artistic.

Modern day Mario on stage

Another video that doesn't require any explanation or humorous caption. Just watch it and giggle in awe like I did, hehe.

This has actually be sitting in my stuff since back in January, and I still find it worth posting after all this time. Beautifully done. Maybe I should've named this place Quirky Mario with all the NES and Mario stuff I end up posting nowadays, geesh.

Need a quirky halloween costume?

Try this one on for size. It's great for groups dressing up together, especially. Why didn't I think of something like this??

From Simon Willison:
I grew up in a college town, and one Halloween our doorbell rang and we opened the door expecting to see trickortreater—but what was in front of our open door—was another door! Like, a full-on wooden door, that had a sign that said “Please knock.” So we did, and the door swung open to reveal a bunch of college dudes dressed as really old grandmothers, curlers in their hair, etc, who proceeded to coo over our “costumes” and tell us we were “such cute trick or treaters!” One even pinched my cheek. Then THEY gave US candy, closed their door, picked it up and walked to the next house.

Cowboys herding cats - The latest rage!

"Anybody can herd cattle. Holding together 10,000 half-wild short hairs, that's another thing altogether."

Before it reaches the end, can you guess what they're actually advertising?

Kitty meets printer and does the twitch dance

Well, it's kind of a dance, right? ;)

Can you describe your life in 6 words? Six-Word Memoirs

Not Quite What I Was Planning:
Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure

Just six words? I struggle with anything that asks me to limit my words to only 100 or 250. Yeesh. I love reading what the others have said, though, and if you check it out on Amazon, you can actually read the first few pages worth, along with the editorial descriptions and commenters who posted their favorites.

Some are sad like the 9 year old who wrote "Cursed with cancer. Blessed by friends," or "Girlfriend is pregnant, my husband said." Others are funny like "Seventy years, few tears, hairy eyes," or "Catholic school backfired. Sin is in!" Yet others are thought-provoking, confusing, pure truths, or just whatever.

They're written by famous people, unknowns, kids, older people, artists, pop musicians, doctors, homeless....you name it, it's there.

The Uniform Project - Quirkify it!

If you haven't heard about this project, Jen will tell you all about it. Basically, Sheena is wearing one dress for 365 days in 365 different ways. For you fashion people, this will be particularly interesting, but even if you're not, it's really cool to check out. Lots of pictures!

Savethewords - Don't let them fade away into nonexistence

Savethewords.org is well, about saving words. Hosted by Oxford Dictionaries, it's filled with tons of old words that are fading away and can be "adopted."

No worries, you don't have to pay a cent. By adopting a word, you're promising to use it in conversation as frequently as you can to help save it from fading away. Turn up your sound to hear the pleas of these endangered words.

If nothing else, it's really interesting to scroll over the collage of words and check out what some of them mean. If you happen to find one that really jumps out to you, don't be afraid to adopt it. I'm sure it'd be muchly appreciated. <3

What news anchors do during the commercial breaks

This video doesn't need any words, but here's what the YouTube caption included:
WGN News anchors Robert Jordan and Jackie Bange have been together for many years. This whole thing started out really small and simple. And then along came the internet, and a video camera, and you tube, and here we are with the funniest dance routine since that scene in Big. It's the original, What News Anchors Do During Commercial Breaks.
