Date a girl who reads…

I'm posting this in its entirety here, mostly because I don't want it lost, but also because there's no original blog to link to....only others who have reposted it in its entirety.

So enjoy. And if you want to find the original author, she’s on Facebook and here’s how she came about writing this in the first place….as just something for her friends, a writing exercise, something casual that became a hit and touched people across the net.

"Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilightseries.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes."

Young Me, Now Me - Side-by-side comparisons

Young Me/Now Me is an adorable, refreshing, funny site that has old pictures mimicked by current versions side by side. I really wish they had an RSS feed so I could subscribe and see new additions. There are tons of photos already there and it's fun to browse through regardless, though. Have fun checking it out!

A Polaroid everyday for 10 years...and one day

We've surely all seen the 365 projects that have become really popular over the last few years, right? Someone vows to take a picture of him/herself every day for a year. There are plenty of variations now, too, vowing to take pictures of anything or specific things, but it started with the personal pictures.

Well Marc Tasman was way ahead of his time. Back in 1999 he started taking a picture of himself using a Polaroid camera every day. 10 years (and one day!) later, those images are part of a super-sped up video showing every single one. The video is only a little over 5 minutes long to cram all 4600+ Polaroid pictures into it (but there's still plenty of time to actually 'see' the pictures, see change, see differences, etc). Amazing.

Looking into the Past - History meets present day photos

Historical pictures laid on top of present day photos

There are lots of these pictures for the Looking Into the Past project. It's such an interesting way to see how things have changed over the years in a single glance. It's particularly interesting when there's a single building in the historical picture but in the present day photograph, there's an entire city built up around it.

Aww. The month of February is full of this sort of gushy stuff, huh? :P

20 things that happen in a minute - Birth, death, natural disasters, Oprah earns money

You'll need to click through to see the full image and be able to read it all.

It's just a bunch of quirky facts about things that occur in a minute. Some are interesting tidbits like "Lightning strikes the earth 360 times and there are 5 earthquakes."

Others are a bit saddening or put things into perspective such as "120,673 pounds of edible food is thrown away in the United States" and "18 people die of starvation."

Show your angel just how angelic she really is

Angel chair has real wings

Or how angelic he is. Either way, it's hard not to feel like an angel when you're sitting proudly with real wings, right? And there's no better time to have one than on Valentine's Day (so you can get this for 'next' year). ;)

Savethewords - Don't let them fade away into nonexistence

Savethewords.org is well, about saving words. Hosted by Oxford Dictionaries, it's filled with tons of old words that are fading away and can be "adopted."

No worries, you don't have to pay a cent. By adopting a word, you're promising to use it in conversation as frequently as you can to help save it from fading away. Turn up your sound to hear the pleas of these endangered words.

If nothing else, it's really interesting to scroll over the collage of words and check out what some of them mean. If you happen to find one that really jumps out to you, don't be afraid to adopt it. I'm sure it'd be muchly appreciated. <3

Glass-shelled hermit crabs

We tried having hermit crabs a couple times. For a family that was in contact with hundreds of animals any given year, the hermit crabs seemed so stereotypical and silly.

And so I wanted one, of course. :P

Of all the animals we rescued, rehabilitated, raised, released (can I get any more 'r' words in there? recycled, reduced, reused??)....we couldn't keep those hermit crabs alive. I felt horrible for it, too, because what should be so hard about hermit crabs? I did all the research and was intrigued by how they choose new homes/shells and how hard it even is to make them feel safe enough to do that in captive environments like ours. They were comfortable to walk around, both in a tank and in our hands or on the floor, etc, but to change to larger shells is completely different. It has to be perfect.

That makes these shells even more amazing. Read more about the hermits moving into these man-made shells over at the NZ publication.

Anti-abuse bus stop ad only beats women when no one is looking

This is one of those rare times where I post something somewhat serious. It's still quirky....different, interesting, not quite the norm....but serious, no less.

I first saw this a couple months ago and I'm still amazed that someone actually thought to put together an ad like this. I'm impressed really, but a little saddened that it's such an issue that there's even a need for them.

It's the first poster that actually responds and reacts to people looking at it. When a person is looking at the poster, there's a perfectly normal, loving couple, but when the person looks away, the woman is being beaten.

It's quite a shocking way to get the idea across, but it makes perfect sense, too. Domestic violence happens when you're not looking....both in people's homes and on these posters.

There's a brief delay with the switch so that people actually know what's going on instead of having to sneak a peek out of the corner of their eye. Kudos to the designer.

Half Pint Dad & Sprog Tshirt Sets - The apple/nut doesn't fall far from the tree

With the overwhelming amount of mommy bloggers out there, I don't get to see nearly as many dad-oriented items as I'd like. Twisted Tees has their own section dedicated just to dads and their little ones, though, and I'm loving them!*

Dad and Son shirts

There are a few more varieties, including a set that say "actual size," hehe, and the half pint ones come in several different colors. And if you're a mom and you just have to have something like this for yourself, there 'is' a babydoll tee style of the plain white half pint shirt.

*Most of them anyway. There are a couple that feature the "F word" that I don't find appropriate, but otherwise, I love the rest.

Smile, smile, smile....because you're great :)

And I mean it.

I don't really mess with Twitter any more, but it's times like this that I'm glad I still stop by every now and then to discover gems like this. Yesterday was Friendship Day and I saw multiple tweets that gave a "Happy Friendship Day!" shoutout to various friends.

One particular guy, Warren Whitlock, tweeted this:
When I saw tweeps wishing "Happy Friendship Day" I was reminded of the guy who really got it.. http://budurl.com/valid
Hmm, a guy that really "gets it"? So I clicked and read the post that simply said "take a  few minutes and watch this movie." It wasn't until "a few minutes" had already passed that I actually looked at how long the video was and almost closed it because it was 16 minutes long! This is the internet....my attention span doesn't allow for concentration on a single thing for 16+ minutes!

Okay, so I still did other things while I watched it, but I didn't close it and it was worth those 16 minutes. It's one of those heart warming "aww" moments repeatedly over 16 minutes.

Really, you should smile, and I hope you watch this video and that it makes you smile a few times. Remember, you're great. :)

Now this is how to have a fun wedding!

For those of you who aren't familiar with the song, here are the first few verses of lyrics. It turned out quirky and fun....but still sweet and romantic at the same time. What a great way to kick off the wedding celebration!

Forever - Chris Brown

It's you and me
Moving at the speed of light into eternity
Tonight is the night
To join me in the middle of ectasy

Feel the melody and the rhythm of the music
Around you, around you

I'ma take you there, I'ma you there
So don't be scared, I'm right here, ready?
We can go anywhere, go anywhere
But first, it's your chance, take my hand, come with me

~Edit~

Check out this that was posted on the Secret Government Eggo Project. It's the divorce dance, lol.

We are not alone.

When I sat down to write about this picture, I started going off into a little tangent. A little "it saddens me that this or that happens so frequently in the U.S." A little "I wish more of these things and those things would be done."

Really, I would rather stick with how National Geographic puts it. Simple and to the point. We are not alone. And we aren't, so do your part to teach people that, especially the kids, and remember it for yourself. Click the picture to see it at a larger size and read the text at the bottom. Go to MyWonderfulWorld, check out some links, read some quick facts, spread the word.

They aren't "asking you for your money, just your voice."

Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- Again!

Yep, I'm doing it again. Notice the pink? Well, it's sort of a pink anyway. I figured after last year's plunge of going the brightest possible pink (see the logo in the lower right hand corner of the Quirky? more hot pink than that), that I'd tone it down and go with something more tolerable for some people.

I still don't like it. Remember? I don't like pink at all. But it's for a good cause, right?

I debated even changing it this year. After all, what does it really do? Seeing a pink blog out of the blue isn't going to make a random passerby think "oh, look, I should go donate to breast cancer causes." And my regular readers surely already know about breast cancer. They know they can donate to good causes, they know to get checked out, they know to be aware....even if they don't do these things.

Reminding you all with links is a good way to "be more aware"....but pink? Pink is just pink, right?

Instead of trying to justify the reasons why I *shouldn't* change my blog color, though, I'm going to stick with the justification that there's certainly no harm in doing so. It's just a color. It's just a month. It's just 30 days where I don't look at the front of my blog, lol.

But those same days are days where maybe someone will read this posts. Maybe someone will think twice. Maybe someone will giggle at my complaints about the color pink....but it'll be in memory of breast cancer victims, in honor of breast cancer survivors and family, and for the awareness of breast cancer in general. Really? How could you go wrong with that?

If you want to participate, see more sites that are going pink, or keep up on the latest news, check out PinkforOctober.

When a girl....

From Baba's Beauty World.

It was the girl's face that attracted me to it. I saw it full-size first (click it to get the full image and be able to read the words), and the child just looks so innocent and sweet. Reading the text gets you a fairly stereotypical "forwarded email" type set of words, but it's still not too bad.

The main thing I noticed in the words, though, was the mention of "sms." Do most of you even know what that means? It's funny how it's written in "today's language"....and yet at the same time, it wouldn't necessarily reach everyone because they won't all know what it means, hehe.

There's a Hole in My Sidewalk--It's All About Choices

Photobucket

This is what I called blatant blog content theft....but I can't resist! After all, she stole the poem from the original author to post it anyway, right? And I'm giving her linky love, so it's okay, right? (Well, not so much, or all those splogs that link to the original blog, but whatever, I'm doing it anyway, hehe).

Pillows and Chocolate
posted the poem below and I love it.

“There’s a Hole in my Sidewalk“, by Portia Nelson

Chapter 1.

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost…
I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in this same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in… it's a habit.
But, my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter 4.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter 5.
I walk down another street.

A Letter That is Slower than Christmas---or 93 Christmases!!

Here's a cute news story about a letter that was sent in 1914....but just now was found. The person it was to be delivered to has since passed away, but they delivered the Christmas card to a relative anyway. No one is quite sure where it has been for the last 93 years.

The Real Santa Claus---Not a Mean Impostor

After the mean/naughty Santa who wanted to spoil Christmas for little children, I thought this was a cute picture of Santa....he even has a reindeer with him! Here's the caption:

Santa Claus waves in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland in 2005. Christmas is hectic for all but particularly for Santa, who must live in Kyrgyzstan and make his rounds at lightning speed if he is to deliver gifts to all the world's children on time, a Swedish consultancy has concluded.

Nasty Santa Sends Mean Letters

This kind of story rather irritates me. If you're bitter with the world and you want to take your anger out somewhere, then find somewhere to do it. If you want to be mean, then fine, whatever. Nobody deserves this kind of randomness, but trying to ruin innocent children's hopes and dreams.....I'm sorry, but I don't think it's right to try to take a child's innocence, even if only in the form of a mythical elf who brings Christmas joy once a year, is just inappropriate.

So what am I talking about? Read the article. Basically, there's a program where people reply to kids' Christmas wish lists from "Santa." I don't know any more about the Canadian program that what is said in the article, but I remember the first time my little sister got a letter from Santa and it was priceless. Our own mailman/woman (they were a couple) would go through all the letters sent to the North Pole and respond personally to each. The twinkle in her eye when my mom read the letter to her was imply magical.

Someone decided to reply with nasty letters, though, and it's caused them to shut down the program until the offender is caught. There are only 8 days until Christmas.....quite unfortunate. :(
