All the leftover (Mario) game stuff

Alright, it's the last day of NaBloPoMo and that means it's the thirtieth day in a row that I've posted about gaming-related things. I had several more things sitting in tabs that I could've posted, but I didn't, so I'm doing a sort of leftover post. Think of it as the weekend after Thanksgiving, but instead of getting sick of turkey, I'm going to make you sick of Mario. :P

Hey, it's been a while since I've posted anything about Mario and this is definitely the video the break that streak. It's strangely uplifting in all its Mario evolution glory. <3

No really. Surely you've played the lava game before. Doesn't every kid play some variation of it or another?

I slid a Mario one in there, but guess what I did?  Quirky Mario Yeah, I went there. I was considering buying the url for it, but uh, who would actually do something silly like that?

Michelangelo Nintendo remix - "Game Over"

It's been a while, right? Right!

So I like quirky art and I love original NES Mario, so of course I want this beauty in my living room. Or maybe out in the garage or something where it might actually fit, but nevermind that.



Drawing direct inspiration from the original La Pieta sculpture of Mary and Jesus by Michelangelo, Kordian Lewandowski created this piece using the Princess and Mario instead. I love that it's named "Game Over" and this quote sums it up quite nicely:

"While the sculpture may not be included in an art history book, it showcases one of the most iconic sculptural subjects of the Renaissance re-contextualized using the storyline of Mario instead of the Bible."

For the record, if I were to put together an art history book, this would totally be in there. History in the making, no?

Facebook Flashback Friday - Games, obesity, and singing (with music!) in the rain

Want another in a series of link dump compilations including all the silly things I've found and shared elsewhere? There are lots more shared on Quirky Jessi's Facebook, but here's a bit for you:

• Disturbing .gif of American obesity issues over the years. If you catch it halfway through the gif animation, just wait it out until it starts over so you can see it all.
  
• Another Mario game. This time, hit space bar to switch between a normal Mario game and tetris to add blocks so Mario can climb through new obstacles.
• Really sketchy bunny pictures. I'm not this creepy, right? 
• Bookcases galore. Lots and lots of them shown here. 
  
• Drumbrella. This rain drum could either be really cool, or really, really annoying.
  
• 8 month old baby hears mommy for the first time after having implants put in.
• I Love Traffic game - Rush through traffic lights to beat various levels. It gets tougher with more lights to switch on and off.

This has actually be sitting in my stuff since back in January, and I still find it worth posting after all this time. Beautifully done. Maybe I should've named this place Quirky Mario with all the NES and Mario stuff I end up posting nowadays, geesh.

Facebook Flashback Friday - Sushi cake, transformer owls, and the history of the world

One more in a series of link dump compilations including all the ridiculous things I've found and shared elsewhere. There are lots more shared on Quirky Jessi's Facebook, but here's some to catch you up:

• Where did it go? Watch closely to see evidence disappear before your eyes. I bet it's just smarties, right?
  
  
• Sushi birthday cake with full instructions and pictures of other people's versions:
  
• When beautiful actors play ordinary/real people
• Transformer owls. Don't worry, you don't need to understand what they're saying. Just watch the birds and if you want further explanation of when it gets bigger/smaller specifically, then check out the description.
  
  
  
  
• Enough Plumbers! This is a Mario-esque type game, but not. It's takes the concept of Mario (jumping around, collecting coins, funny sound effects) and turns it into a new puzzle game where as you collect each coin, you increase the number of plumbers you're playing at once. It can get really crazy, but fun. Try it out. :) 
• Ingenious label design that ensure the food you're getting is fresh. The hourglass stickers use a special ink that changes colors as ammonia is released inside, indicating when the meat gets older. Cool, huh?
  
• A brief history of pretty much everything. No really, it's all there. :D
  

Decorate your walls with Mario

I want, I want, I want.

I saved the best for last because um, well just because. I would love to have these restickable wall stickers for myself sometime. I'm thinking maybe for an office? Or a kids' play room?

There's a gallery of photos on Think Geek (where you can buy them) and someone even used them in a bathroom. Another has them in a doctor's office (what a cool idea!). I don't really care where others put them because *I* want them. Hopefully this doesn't shock anyone too much after all my Nintendo talk a while back, heh.

They come in Donkey Kong and "new" Super Mario versions, too, but I love the original. <3

Yeah, I want these even more now. :(

You can still play your old NES and Super Nintendo games!

Yeah, yeah, "geek week" is turning out to be more like "let's play Nintendo! please, please, please??"

What can I say? I liked the original Nintendo systems and still have at least 3 in my closet at the moment, along with dozens of games. Unfortunately, the last working system I have requires a well-placed butterknife to be slid in on top of the game juuusssttt right, and you can't even so much as breathe the wrong way while playing or it'll lose connection. Yes, it's sad, but I couldn't bear to risk losing the only playable systems for all those games.

Well now there's the Retro Duo NES/SNES Game System on Think Geek. *Drools* Not only is this thing a beauty, but it's functional 'and' cheap. It plays both NES and SNES games, both of which are top loading. As Jeff says over at CNET:

"That means no more trial and error playing "Legend of Zelda" or "Super
Mario Brothers 3." No more taking the cartridge back out, blowing on it
furiously, slamming it back in the console and powering up, hoping
you're not greeted with a screen of wavy lines or misformed game
sprites only to once again take Mario's name in vain."

Oh so true! And at roughly 50 bucks, it's well worth it to put all those old games back to use. Did I mention how stylish, chic, and amazingly drool-worthy it is, too? Yeah? Okay, just making sure. You can even use your old controllers or stick with the ones included with the system. Choices, choices. Can you say Duck Hunt gun??

(And yes, I know there are other retro-type systems out there that claim to offer the same experience, but they're usually not-so-cool, require game chips, etc....not the same as this at all!)

Creative 404 Page Not Found Pages

Although I hate clicking a link and finding myself faced with a nasty 404 error, announcing that the page I wanted to see, isn't actually there after all.....I love when people get creative with those pages. It kinda softens the blow, if nothing else, and sometimes makes me giggle.

Here's a collection of really great 404 customizations (which also has some links to some more great error pages, so enjoy!). There's even some great animated ones that were really.....interesting, hehe.

Gaming fashion....because sometimes, you have to go outside
